High Fever Baby Can Damage the Brain

Most parents panic when their child had a high fever. One of the concerns, increase in body temperature that would cause damage to the brain.

Basically fever is the body's mechanism against interference caused by infection. The baby is said to fever if temperature above 37.5 degrees Celsius, which can be measured with a thermometer.

"Remember that fever is not a disease. Higher body temperature will help the body fight bacteria or viruses like body temperature ranges from 37 degrees Celsius," said Jo Ann Rohyans, pediatrician.

Fever also serves as a warning to the body to make infection-fighting chemicals, such as white blood cells and antibodies. However, when the child's temperature continues to rise to 39 degrees Celsius, then we tend to want to lower the temperature.

Jo Ann explained, is actually a normal body temperature of a sick child reaches 40 degrees Celsius. Although a fever over 41 degrees Celsius are rare (unless the child is in a hot room or a clothes clothe double-double), in general, are able to tolerate the child's body temperature is 42 degrees Celsius in the absence of long-term impact.

"Brain damage is very rare due to high fever. However, you should immediately contact your doctor if your child's temperature reached 39.4 degrees Celsius or more," he said.

Some children aged 6 months-5 years are able to experience febrile seizures. However, these seizures usually do not cause brain damage.

He added that the important thing is to observe the condition of the child during a fever. If the child seems lethargic, fussy, or restless, then give fever-lowering drugs or compress with warm water in the armpits and groin. Avoid wrapping the child in a blanket or warm clothes because it will make it difficult body heat out.
