People with Mental Disorders More Likely Smoking


Jakarta, smoking has long been associated with various diseases on him. However, reports received recently indicate adults with mental disorders tend to smoke more.

The statistics reported by researchers CDC, the U.S. revealed adults with mental disorders tend to smoke 70 percent higher than adults without mental disorders.

"Smoking is a mental illness is a serious health problem and need more attention," said Dr. Thomas Frieden, director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), USA, as quoted by Reuters on Thursday (02/07/2013).
Dr. Frieden said many things need to be done to help smokers who have a mental illness in order to quit bad habits. In this case the need for help healthcare facilities.
Smokers in this study is defined as someone who smoked within the previous 30 days, and mental illness is defined as a mental disorder, behavioral or emotional diagnosed within the last 12 months.
Researchers found 36 percent of adults with mental illness are smokers, compared with 21 percent of adults without mental illness. And people with mental illness to smoke more heavily and more.
Some people think smoking can cope with mental illnesses such as anxiety or stress. However unwittingly smoking can cause a long list of other health problems.
"There are a lot of medication and counseling is more and very good, unlike cigarettes that take away 10 years of your life," said Dr. Frieden.
For it is now urgent mental health facility CDC to issue a ban on smoking both by patients and staff. Smoking not only worsen the condition, but also the leading cause of death could be prevented.
